A Christmas Wish

The image I did for my Christmas Cards this year. My attempt to do something a little bit in the style of Dave McKean...

...and a step by step showing the process...

One picture, two versions

A quick painting (shown actual size) based loosely on a photo of Charlize Theron, but it doesn't look like her.

The yellow/green/blue version was done first, then I played around a bit and got the second, colder, version.

Liv, a little

A challenge from a work colleague - she named a celebrity, and I had to paint them within the course of a work afternoon.

She chose Liv Tyler, and I did this in two and a half hours.

The Joker

Some random images of the Clown Prince of Crime, in order of creation:

Shaken, not stirred.

Some recent James Bond sketches...

Sean Connery in Dr No, when he first utters the immortal line "Bond, James Bond"; a rough caricature of the latest 007, Daniel Craig; and a generic non-specific-actor Bond.

And some Bond villains...

Donald Pleasance as Blofeld (the definitive interpretation of the character, in my opinion) in You Only Live Twice; and Mads Mikkelsen as La Chiffre in Casino Royale.

Star Trekkin'...

A old sketch of Captain Kirk, and some recent paintings of Mr Spock and Lt Uhura.

Miss Luana

A portrait of model Luana Lani, with various stages of completion.

This is from a period when I still drew everything on paper first, before scanning and painting over - these days I do it all digitally from beginning to end.

This image links to a full size version of the finished piece.

The show's not over...

...'til the fat lady sings. This is a couple of years old but I still like it. First is the original blue pencil rough sketch; followed by the finished painting.

I don't really know anything about opera other than what I've learned from Chuck Jones' cartoons.

Nightcrawler

A painting and a couple of old sketches of the popular X-Men member

The Scarlett Murderess...

A fake cover - my homage those of the 1950s and 60s paperback crime novels. I'm a huge fan of that particular genre of illustration, especially the great Robert McGinnis.

30min sketches

A bunch of quick sketches done to loosen up and sometimes to get me out of a block.

Hey! hey! We're the Monkeys...

Some ape related art from a recent Drawing Board Jam. Most of these were done at the actual size that they are posted.

Left to right - Cornelius and Dr Zaius (from the original Planet of the Apes); Gorilla Grodd (a villain from the Flash comics); General Thade (from Tim Burton's Planet of the Apes re-imagining); Stephen Collins as Capt Jake Cutter (from 80s TV show Tales of the Gold Monkey); One of the "Dawn of Man" apes (from 2001: A Space Odyssey); and... er... Mickey Dolenz (from The Monkees)

Keira Knightley

A portrait of Keira Knightley, with close up.

Caricatures

It'd been years since I tried my hand at caricature, but I did some recently for Jams at the Drawing Board - I quite enjoyed doing them, and was pretty pleased with the results.

From left to right - Matt Damon; Uma Thurman; John Goodman; Hans Christian Anderson

Uma was the most difficult, as it's tricky to distort the features of a beautiful woman and still keep her attractive.

Famous faces

Some portraits done over the last few months.

Left to right: Audrey Tautou; Shakira; Michelle Rodriguez
